Local Government Group/CLOA

LG Group / CLOA Culture, Tourism and Sport Conference

The Local Government Group's annual Culture, Tourism and Sport Conference has been highly successful over many years. CLOA has been a supporter for most of these, and the relationship began to be more structured some 10 years ago, beginning with the inclusion of the always popular CLOA Fringe meeting. For the last few years we have effectively been a strategic partner, with joint branding of the event, and had an increasing influence on the programme. CLOA Honorary Secretary John Bell is currently our lead for this, and if you have any suggestions etc you can contact him on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. With the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Diamond Jubilee, Cultural Olympiad and countless local activities and celebrations, 2012 is going to be a huge year for local culture, tourism and sport services. But coming hot on the heels of the toughest financial settlement in a generation, and with budget pressures continuing:

  • how can the services you lead exploit the opportunities of 2012 and beyond?
  • how have your libraries, museums, sports and arts services adapted to budget pressures?
  • how are you working with volunteers, social enterprises and the private sector to improve efficiency?
  • how can culture, tourism and sport improve public health, inspire children and young people to learn and boost the economy?
  • Confirmed Speakers include Rt Hon Hugh Robertson  MP, Minister for Sport and the Olympics

At the 2011 Coference in York, there were over 120 delegates present to hear Ed Vaizey MP, Culture Minister, give the keynote political address at this year’s CTS conference.  The Minister praised the work of councils, supported by the Local Government Group, to modernise libraries through the Future Libraries Programme.  Delegates also heard from councils who are at the cutting edge of improving local cultural services and other high profile speakers - including Loyd Grossman, Chair of the Churches Conservation Trust - in a series of lively plenary addresses, debates and workshops. You can view the presentations from the conference here.
