LGA say:
The LGA/CLOA Annual Culture conference went off swimmingly in Gateshead on 30 and 31 March 2010. We’d like to thank all of you who were able to attend and made the event so successful. The debate got more lively as the conference progressed, which is perhaps a sign of things to come, and the sector stayed upbeat against the backdrop of considerable challenges. Constructive conversations with a heavy dose of realism were the order of the day.

Presentations from the conference are available via the LGA events website, and we have plenty of post-conference views from the likes of ISPAL and our conference partners, CLOA, on our blog at www.lgaculture.wordpress.com. We will keep it running until the launch of our post-conference Prospectus for the Future of Culture, Tourism and Sport, which will be winging its way to an incoming Secretary of State near you, shortly after the election has decided exactly who this will be.

Preparations are underway for next year’s conference, which of course we hope will prove to be even bigger and better. This will of course require your continued support and, we hope, increased input – let us hear what you want to talk about by emailing conference topic and speaker ideas to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. CLOA will be working with LGA on the 2011 conference

The Future of Culture, Tourism & Sport

Chaired by CLOA, this annual Neil Stewart Associates event once again focused on the future of the sector. Covering a diverse range of issues including strategic commissioning, heritage protection reform, peer review and third sector capacity building, The Future of Culture, Tourism and Sport conference helped delegates to make the case for continued support of non-essential services based on positive outcomes and the wellbeing they afford local communities. The conference was held on Thursday 17th September 2009 at the Cavendish Conference Centre, London W1G. For more information, click here.

Information about the 2010 event will be posted as soon as it is available.

We also partner NSA on the annual "Young People and Sport" conference. held in November 2009, this proved highly successful and will be repeated in Autumn 2010. This widely-recognised annual conference brought together local authority leaders and leisure officers, representatives from NGBs, and other key organisations with a stake in youth sports provision to discuss how the goals of the government’s PESSYP strategy and those of councils' local area agreements can be achieved in tandem through sport.
